When talking about highflyers with accomplishments in many areas of their lives, men who made an indelible mark everywhere they went to, it is impossible not to mention Doctor Professor Irinel Popescu. From the moment he became a doctor in 1977 till now, it has been from one excellent role to another. While many are satisfied with just being doctors, not this great man who has made giant strides not only in the medical field but in other areas as well.
Professor Doctor Poopescu completed his education in 1977 and five years after that; he became a specialist surgeon in 1983. He continued his career progression at a steady pace by becoming a General Surgeon in 1990, after acquiring a PhD from the same university where he studied medicine. Between 1992 and 1995, the Doctor worked abroad in different countries. For instance, he spent two weeks the Charite Hospital in Berlin, another two months at the Hôpital Paul-Brousse in Villejuif, France, before moving to the United States where the Doctor spent about three years working at the Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, and six months at Pittsburgh University. His journey around the world continued after that with exchange programs with instructions such as Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, “Eppendorf” University in Hamburg, Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, University Hospital in Essen, “Palio Faliro” hospital in Athens, and “Niguarda” hospital in Milan.
Awards and Honour
With decades of service to the medical and teaching profession across various countries, Popescu has shown that he is highly deserving of the highest honours ever. He was inducted as Member of the Academy of Sciences. He received an Honoris Causa of the University “Ovidius” of Constanta, Honoris Causa of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Craiova, the position of Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Targu Mures, and the role of Honorary Professor at the University “Ovidius” of Constanta. He has also been awarded the teacher degree by the International School of Surgical Oncology for his professionalism, medical achievements, and dedication while collecting the Romanian Star prize of National Distinction for his extraordinary merits in organ transplants and liver surgery.
One only has to look at the multiple merit awards won by Professor Doctor Popescu to understand the extent of his achievements as surgeon and administrator. In the field of Liver Surgery, the Doctor performed more than 1500 liver resections, a feat that ranks a world record for one clinic. He also made substantial contributions to other fields as well such as Digestive oncology, Robotic surgery, laparoscopic surgery, etc.
It is no surprise with all his incredible achievement and accomplishments; Professor Doctor Popescu sits on the board of many organisations both in Romania and beyond.
