In 2004, Professor Doctor Irinel Popescu ventured into politics by contesting to be a senator in the Romanian Parliament. He ran under the Conservator Party to represent Dolj County and won the election. He served his term as a senator between 2004 and 2008. In reality, the Conservator Party was formerly known as the Humanist Party of Romania.
In the 2004 parliamentary elections in which Popescu contested, the Conservator Party formed an alliance with the Social Democratic Party. It would later merge in 2015 with the Liberal Reformist Party with whom they formed the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE).
Popescu was an active parliamentarian who made sure that he justified the mandate the people gave him. In the 26 plenary sittings that were held during his time in office, he gave 36 speeches and also moved motions twice. He was further responsible for 26 legislative initiatives within that period. He was the chairman of the National Education Committee during his time in the parliament.
